PALOS HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES March 9, 2006 Call to Order: President Beth Barista called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Library, 12501 S. 71st Avenue, Palos Heights, Illinois. Present were Trustees: Timothy Murney, Pat Eden, Julie Lawler, Beverly Meyer, Pat Muller, Frank Petrosino, William Poore, Diana Roscich and Beth Barista. Also present were Administrative Librarian Elaine Savage and Administrative Assistant Donna Ondriska.
Minutes: Trustee Poore moved, Trustee Eden seconded, to approve the minutes of February 9, 2006. Trustee Muller moved, Trustee Murney seconded to amend the minutes of February 9, 2006 to reflect corrected administrative librarian salary. On a voice vote, both motions carried unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Poore seconded, to approve the additional February bills in the amount of $42,160.07. On a roll call vote the motion carried unanimously. Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Lawler seconded to approve the March bills of $19,721.63. On a roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously.
President’s Report: No formal report. She noted that Administrative Librarian Savage and herself had met with St. Alexander’s to discuss the sidewalk concerns and were awaiting a reply back if the Archdiocese had to approve. President Barista noted a patron’s concern of food in the library and stated that the Administrative Librarian has posted the Patron Behavior Policy, has personally observed the storytimes and had the Youth Services department send letters to the parents who frequent the storytimes regarding this matter. She congratulated Administrative Librarian on her 18 years of service with the Library.
Librarian’s Report: Administrative Librarian Savage presented her written report for the past month. She stated there was a good turnout for Illinois Library Day in Springfield and had personally met two of our legislators. Administrative Librarian Savage mentioned that we received a letter and were awarded the annual per capita grant for $13,866.69. She noted that the staff had an in-service morning program and was shown different defibrillator models by a CPR instructor and downloadable books were demonstrated by one vendor. Upcoming events include National Library Week and the Chamber Expo at Trinity College.
Correspondence: Administrative Librarian Savage noted she received a postcard from Senator Maloney in regards to library funding.
Budget & Finance: None.
Policy: None. Publicity: None.
Building and Grounds: No report. Trustee Poore asked if any decision had been made on purchasing additional shelving for the book drop room’s east wall. Trustee Petrosino noted the committee had not met and asked Administrative Librarian Savage to get pricing information.
Personnel: None. Friends of the Library Liaison: Trustee Poore reported the Friends will have a summer book sale August 11th - 15th. Preview night will be Friday, the 11th. Sale on Saturday, August 12th and Monday, August 14th. Tuesday, August 15th half-day Bag Sale. The new owner of the Country House Restaurant mentioned that the fundraiser was successful, but did not total all the receipts or issue the check yet. The fundraiser will continue next year.
City Council Liaison: Trustee Eden noted that the City has been discussing the pool issue and approved up to $50,000 for repairs, but that no long range plan has been decided. Administrative Librarian Savage mentioned that the Mayor will be doing a proclamation for Library Week at the April 4th council meeting if anyone could attend. Local History: Administrative Librarian Savage presented four paintings to the board to discuss disposition. Trustee Poore moved, Trustee Murney seconded to place all four paintings in temporary storage. On voice vote, the motion carried unanimously. Administrative Librarian Savage requested permission to reframe aerial photos.
Long Range Planning: Trustee Meyer noted that Administrative Librarian Savage gave her sample surveys to review and asked for a copy of a book that was referenced. Old Business: HVAC - Administrative Librarian Savage is still working with all involved parties. The air conditioning has just been turned on, so hope to have some data soon, Commonwealth Edison has left the recorders attached and the engineer has been in contact with Commonwealth Edison.
St. Alexander’s Sidewalk - As President Barista mentioned, she and the Administrative Librarian met with Jack Schuch from St. Alexander’s. St. Alexander’s has agreed to the Library’s conditions, but are awaiting a review from the Archdiocese. The Library has received the formal agreement from our attorney. Trustee Lawler suggested postponing any decision till the board’s next meeting. By consensus, the Board agreed not to sign the agreement until April.
Employee Benefit - Administrative Librarian Savage presented information on another 403 B plan to offer to the employees, besides the one offered by the City. Trustee Lawler motioned, Trustee Murney seconded, to authorize local investment companies to design a 403 B plan for the employees. On a voice vote, the motion carried unanimously. New Business: State Annual Report - Administrative Librarian Savage distributed copies of the annual report and asked authorization to have the President, Secretary and Administrative Librarian sign the report. Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Poore seconded to authorize signage of the annual report.
Adjournment: Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Poore seconded to adjourn the meeting. On a voice vote, the motion carried unanimously. President Beth Barista adjourned the meeting at 8:05 pm.
