BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MINUTES OF MEETING
May 8, 2003


CALL TO ORDER:
Vice-President John Eckman called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Library, 12501 S. 71st Avenue, Palos Heights. Present were: Trustees Beth Barista, Cal Bouma, Pat Eden, Bill Poore and Diana Roscich. Absent were: Birgit LaMantia and Pat Muller. President Beverly Meyer arrived at 7:05 pm to conduct the meeting. Also present was Administrative Librarian Elaine Savage. 

WELCOME OF GUESTS:
None.

MINUTES:
Trustee Bouma moved, Trustee Barista seconded, to approve the minutes of the April 10, 2003, meeting as amended. On voice vote the motion carried unanimously.

TREASURER'S REPORT:
Trustee Barista moved, Trustee Bouma seconded, to approve the April additional bills of $49,778.85 for a total of $61,916.11 and the April bill list of $25,448.9. On roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously. Trustees Barista and Bouma also moved and seconded to approve the construction bills in the amount of $90,628.17. On roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT:
None.

LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
Elaine distributed copies of her regular monthly report. Elaine also reported that Trustees Barista, Eden and Roscich were reappointed to the Board. Moving preparations and the auditor’s work were also noted.

CORRESPONDENCE:
Bonnie Strack sent a thank you note for the journal she won during National Library Week.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Budget & Finance:
None.

Policy:
Under Building Expansion Committee

Publicity:
Trustee Poore reported on the publicity committee’s activities: planning the groundbreaking; book sale/garage sale organizing and fundraising discussion. It was the consensus to give policy committee feedback on a donor program so they can meet in July. It was also decided to review the schedule of the library newsletter at the end of the summer.

Buildings & Grounds:
None. Trustee Barista left the meeting at 7:30 pm.

Parking Lot & Building Expansion:
Trustee Bouma moved, Trustee Eden seconded to hire Hallet Movers at a cost not to exceed $35,000 for both moves. Trustee Eden reviewed their committee minutes noting that the committee had a walk-thru of the 127th storefronts on May 1st. By consensus, it was decided to send the information from Talsma to the architect for a response. Trustee Bouma moved, Trustee Eden seconded to adopt the procedures outlined for the disposal of excess library equipment. On voice vote, it passed unanimously.

Personnel:
None.

Friends of the Library Liaison:
The next Friends meeting is May 21st at 3 pm.

City Council Liaison:
Trustee Eden presented a written report on city activities.

St. Alexander’s:
Trustee Barista reported before she left that Lombard will not be bidding on the church’s project.

OLD BUSINESS:
Fundraising - It was discussed under Parking Lot and Building Expansion committee.

NEW BUSINESS:
Review of Chapters in Serving Our Public - The Administrative Librarian reviewed chapters IV and VII of the standards for Illinois public libraries with the Board. The Library is doing quite well.

Per Capita Grant Application - Trustee Poore moved, Trustee Eden seconded to apply for this annual grant and submit it as required. On voice vote, the motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business, Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Eckman seconded, to adjourn. On voice vote, the motion carried unanimously, and President Meyer adjourned the meeting at 8.45 p.m.

Computer Education

John Hojek teaches computer education classes all over the southwest side and now, you can learn from his expertise. John will lead the following four classes and provide laptop computers for all attendees. There is a resident and non-resident fee, no refunds, and limit of 15 students. Non-residents may register one week before program dates, if space is available. 

Clean Up & Tune Up Your Computer, Saturday, January 24 from 10am to 1pm - $15 fee / $20 N/R fee
If your computer has turned into a slug, it's time to give it a boost! Learn how to clean up and delete old and hazardous files to optimize performance. This class will also cover security issues, virus protection and more.
