BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES
June 14, 2007

Call to Order:
President Beth Barista called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Library, 12501 S. 71st Avenue, Palos Heights, Illinois.  Present were Trustees: Pat Eden, Bill Poore, Beverly Meyer, Julie Lawler and Frank Petrosino.  Absent were Trustees Muller and Roscich. Also present were Administrative Librarian Elaine Savage and Head of Technical Services Shirley Kanapackis. President Barista appointed Trustee Lawler to be acting secretary in the absence of the secretary. 

Welcome:            
The Board welcomed 3 visitors: Gary Kueltzo, Dennis Giancarlo, Annette Barry and Karen Hayes.  Mr. Kueltzo spoke to the Board about the employment of Lisa Giancarlo; Mrs. Barry spoke about the St. Alexander’s sidewalk and Mrs. Hayes distributed Internet filtering information.

Minutes:
Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Poore seconded, to approve the minutes of April 12, 2007 as amended.  On a voice vote, it carried unanimously.  Corrections noted: spelling of Fred Schlipf; add “sent to a new committee without a vote” under revised salary schedule and “motion carried unanimously” added to the action for Non-resident fee

Treasurer’s Report:             
Trustee Petrosino moved, Trustee Poore seconded to approve the remainder of May bills in the amount of $55,856.73.  On a roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously.  Trustee Petrosino moved, Trustee Poore seconded to approve the June bills of $29,189.63.  On a roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously.

President’s Report: 
No report.
           
Librarian’s Report:
Administrative Librarian Savage reported the theft of the new flower pots in front of the library.  She also mentioned that a healthy bush appeared to be dying two days later and wondered if someone was tampering with our landscaping.  A monetary donation was received from the Lions Club for large print and audio materials. The staff is preparing for the 4th of July parade. 359 children and 93 adults have signed up for summer reading as of the board meeting. The Librarian also shared other patron comments.Correspondence:  A thank you letter was received from Brookfield Public Library for their library tour. 

Budget & Finance: 
No report.           

Publicity:
No report.

Building and Grounds:            
Trustees Eden and Petrosino walked through the buildings and grounds. Minor items were noted i.e. plant replacement and paint chips, which are being addressed.
 
Personnel: 
No report.
           
Friends of the Library Liaison:            
Trustee Poore reported the theft of the flower pots.  The new president of the Friends is Joyce Eddy.  The Regional had a nice picture of Paul Boundas giving the library a check. Bill and Elaine represented the Friends at the Farmers Market on June 6th.

City Council Liaison:    
Trustee Poore reported that Karen Hayes had given the city council members a packet with information on Internet filtering. A Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee has been formed to assist with a city wide long-range plan for Palos Heights.  The next North Point meeting will be held June 18th at the Recreation Center.

Local History: 
There is a now a computer in the local history room.

Long Range Planning: 
The long-range plan document was given to all board members.  The committee’s work is now completed.

Special Ad Hoc Salary:
Trustee Meyer reported that the committee had met.  Trustee Meyer moved, Trustee Poore seconded to approve the salary schedule as presented which amends the page starting salary to $7.50 per hour in accordance with state law effective July 1, 2007. On a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously.  The committee also recommended appointing a committee in the fall to compare our salaries to other area libraries.

Old Business: 
Library hours - Due to Sunday hours, the Administrative Librarian was directed to investigate restaurants in Palos Heights for a December holiday party.
       
New Business:
St. Alexander School parent request - Annette Barry earlier in the meeting addressed the Board with the request that the gate between St. Alexander’s and the Library would be unlocked daily after school so that students would have library access direct from school.  The administrative librarian was instructed to write a letter to the principal of St. Alexander and ask for formal clarification.

Update server software - Administrator Savage advised the board that an update of software for the server was needed. Bill Poore moved, Pat Eden seconded.  On a roll call vote, motion passed unanimously.

Adjournment:
Trustee Eden moved, Trustee Meyer seconded to adjourn the meeting.  On a voice vote, the motion carried unanimously. President Barista adjourned the meeting at 9:05 pm.

Teen Corner: Programs for Tweens and Teens

Teen Sports Bar - Mondays at 1:30pm

Grades 6 and up.
July 7 - Altered Shirts. Bring an ordinary t-shirt and turn it into your own unique fashion statement.
July 14 - Sport Demo. Come in and see a demonstration on frisbee golf. There will also be a few frisbee golf discs given away.
July 21 - Altered Books. Bring your own paperback or use one of ours to create a book that is uniquely you.

Mother Daughter Book Discussion - July 7 at 7 pm
Book Lovers. Grades 6 and up. We will read and discuss 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson.

TGIF Games -  Friday, July 11 & 25 at 1pm
Play a variety of board and electronic games with your friends.
