Adult Programs

Palos Heights residents are given preference for all programs. Registration for Palos Heights residents will begin on issuance of the newsletter. Non-residents may register one week before date of program, is space is available. Please register for all programs at the Adult Services desk or by calling 448-1473.

Lyric Opera Lectures
Lyric Opera of Chicago Lecture Corps will present a program on the following operas on Mondays at 1pm during September and October.

Chicago Bears History - Wednesday, September 15 at 7pm
Journalists and author Roy Taylor will lead a multimedia presentation with photos and video clips that highlight the history of the Chicago Bears from the 1920s to today. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and autographs.

Eastland Disaster - Sunday, September 19 at 2pm
Early Saturday morning, July 24, 1915, thousands of Western Electric employees and their families boarded the S.S. Eastland. However, the ship never left the Chicago River. Instead it rolled over onto its side at the river’s edge with over 2,500 passengers on board. Nearly 850 lost their lives. Susan Decker and Barbara Decker Wachholz, granddaughters of a survivor and co-founders of the Eastland Disaster Historical Society will share this compelling story.

Long-Term Care Planning - Thursday, September 23 at 10am
At some point millions of Americans will need or provide long-term care (LTC). Billions of dollars are spent each year in LTC. Kim Bumsted, from New England Financial will explain how to plan for LTC, funding options for LTC, government programs and how it affects LTC, retirement planning and LTC insurance.

AARP Driver Safety Program - Saturday, September 25, 9am to 5pm
This is the first and most recognized comprehensive course designed for the older driver. Drivers who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate which may qualify them for a discount on their auto insurance premium. Please bring a current driver’s license. Class size is limted. Payment is required at registration. $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Make checks payable to AARP.

The First 60 Seconds - Tuesday, September 28 at 7pm
Win the job interview before it begins! Did you know a hiring manager makes a decisive qualification of a job candidate within 60 seconds of their first meeting? Dan Burns, author of The First 60 Seconds shares tools and techniques to make a great first impression. Copies of his book will be available to purchase, a book signing to follow.

College: Don't Pay Sticker - Tuesday, October 5 at 7pm
Ron Rago of College Planning Strategies shows you how to pick the college that will cause the least damage to your family’s finances. Learn to take maximum advantage of tax credits and deductions.

Laughter & Meditation - Thursday, October 7 at 7pm
Om Johari talks about the health, psychological and spiritual benefits of laughter, using laughter as an example of meditation. Learn what, why and how to meditate. He will conclude by relating meditation to gratitude which can lead to being happy all the time.

Dinner & A Movie - Friday, October 8 at 6pm
Watch “No Reservations” starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin. The film will be followed by a catered dinner. Reservations are required! Tickets are $12 and space is limited to 48 people. Buy your tickets at the Adult Services desk. Sorry, no refunds will be given.

Meet Lois Roelofs - Wednesday, October 13 at 7pm
Lois Roelofs, Professor Emerita, Trinity Christian College, discusses her memoir, Caring Lessons: A Nursing Professor’s Journey of Faith and Self. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow. All proceeds have been designated for nursing scholarships at Trinity Christian College.
