Adult Programs

Palos Heights residents are given preference for all programs. Registration for Palos Heights residents will begin on issuance of the newsletter. Non-residents may register one week before date of program, is space is available. Please register for all programs at the Adult Services desk or by calling 448-1473.

Foreign Film Series
In cooperation with Palos Fine Arts, the Library will once again show foreign films on a Friday afternoon and night in March and April. The dates and films are:

Cookies Made Easy! - Tuesday, March 9 at 7pm
Susan Powell, of InFocus Design, shows how to make quick homemade cookies using just 3 ingredients. As a special holiday treat, Susan demonstrates how to make Bailey’s Fudge. Samples and receipes will be provided. Registration is limited to 30 attendees.

Dinner and a Movie - Friday, March 12 at 5:30pm
Watch Meryl Streep and Amy Adams portray Julie and Julia. After the film, enjoy a catered dinner by Chef Ronaldo of Palos Heights. Forty-two tickets are available at $12.00 each. Purchase at the Adult Services desk by Monday, March 8th. Sorry, no refunds.

An Ordinary Woman - Sunday, March 14 at 2pm
Janet Gilleland, professional dramatist, will present a costumed presentation of the story of an 1890’s Schoolmarm, depicting the life of an ordinary woman in the early 1900’s. She will reflect on her life as a wife and mother, and the affects of the suffragette movement.

Finding Your Chicago Irish - Monday, March 15 at 7pm
Let author Sharon Shea Bossard steer you beyond the shamrocks and green beer into the heart and soul of Irish Chicago. Copies of her book will be available for purchase; a book signing will follow her presentation. 

Chairman's Board - Sunday, March 21 at 2pm
Peter Oprisko will delight us with music of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. Listen to songs by Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and more.

Stamping with Jenny - Wednesday, March 24 at 7pm
Stamping is not just for cards and scrapbooks! Let Jenny Cullen, Stampin’ Up!, teach you unique ways to use stamps. Join Jenny as she shows you how to make a beautiful candle shade and a note holder. Pre-registration is required.

Farming on Your Patio - Monday, April 19 at 7pm
Stretching food dollars makes sense in any economy, and growing your own food is rewarding in many ways. Nancy Pollard, University of Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator, will share vegetable and herb gardening techniques for people with a patio, deck, porch, or any type of backyard.

AARP Driver Safety Program - Saturday, April 24 - 9am to 5pm
This course designed especially for the older driver. Those who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate which may qualify them for a discount on their auto insurance. Please bring a current driver’s license and your AARP card. Class size is limited. Payment is required at registration. The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Focus on Seniors Day - Tuesday, April 27 - 9:30am to 5pm
Listen to various speakers throughout the day - a Certified Elder Law Attorney, Understanding At-Home Services, Glucose Screening, Diabetes Lecture and PLOWS. Palos Heights Police and Fire Department personnel will also be on hand. Check the Library for a detailed agenda. Light refreshments will be served and raffles held throughout the day. Reservations are required by April 16th.

Antique Treasures - Thursday, April 29 at 7pm
Antique dealers, Judith Gannon and daughter Mary Beth Gannon-Keegan will tell you what your antique treasures are worth and how to find more. Sorry, no jewelry, coins, stamps, books or items post 1950’s. Limit one item per person. Please register, space is limited.

Computer Education

John Hojek teaches computer education classes all over the southwest side and now, you can learn from his expertise. John will lead the following classes and provide laptop computers for all attendees. There is a resident and non-resident fee, no refunds, and limit of 15 students.

Word I (2003) - Thursday, March 11, 1pm to 5pm - $20 Fee / $30 Non-Resident Fee
Students will be introduced to word processing using Word. Create a basic document, discuss saving options, templates and how to navigate your document. Learn to use Auto Correct, select text using the keyboard and mouse, formatting and spell check.

Clean Up Your Computers - Monday, March 22, 5pm to 8pm - $15 Fee / $20 Non-Resident Fee
If your computer has turned into a slug, it’s time to give it a boost! Learn how to clean up and delete old and hazardous files to optimize performance. The class will also cover security issues, virus protection and more.

Excel (2003) - Saturday, April 3, 10am to 2pm - $20 Fee / $30 Non-Resident Fee
This class will teach the many capabilities of spreadsheets and how to avoid making major mistakes. Participants will also learn basic formatting, how to input and save data and basic formulas.

Basic Email - Monday, April 26, 4pm to 8pm - $20 Fee / $30 Non-Resident Fee
Learn the basics of what email is and is not. Set up an email account and practice sending, receiving, forwarding and replying. Security issues will be discussed, as well as the advantages of having an extra account.

One-on-One Computer Training

Wednesdays from 4pm to 5pm by Appointment
Students from the National Honor Society of Chicago Christian High School will be on hand during the school year to provide one hour of individualized computer instruction. Stop by Adult Services desk to register.
