Summer Reading '08: Rock & Roll Reading
Sign-up begins Monday, June 9th and the fun concludes on Friday, August 15th.

This summer, read some oldies but goodies and keep a "record" of what you read. Stop by the Adult Services Desk for your packet. Our retro themed end of summer reading party will be held on Monday, August 18th.

Southern Spain and Exotic Morocco - Thursday, May 8 at 7pm
Explore Costa del Sol on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, and visit historic Seville and Cordoba. Tour Malaga, birthplace of Picasso, and the Alhambra, one of Spain's greatest splendors. Enjoy the "Pueblos Blanco" (White Villages) of Rondo and Mijas. Finally, cross the Strait of Gibraltar to exotic Morocco, with travel consultants Sonia and Bob Lawrentz.

And Then Mama Said... - Tuesday, May 13 at 7pm
Local columnist and author, Alice Collins, joins us for an evening of warm hearted laughter and reflection. Alice will give her presentation entitled "And Then Mama Said...", a humorous, beguiling look at sayings Mama repeated daily. The ones you vowed never to say, but somehow became part of your vocabulary too!

Bowling: Get Rolling with Wii! - Friday, May 16 at 6:30pm
Ever wonder what your kids and grandkids mean when they say they're going to play Wii? Come learn at our night of virtual bowling. Compete against other adults and surprise your family with new virtual game skills. The class will be limited to the first 16 who sign up and snacks will be served. Get our your bowling shirt and come join the fun!

Vintage Cookbooks, Modern Cooks - Monday, May 19 at 7pm
Today's American food scene includes new ingredients and ethnic cuisines. Meet Penelope Bingham, Food Historian, who will invite the audience to consider the place of American cookbooks and recipes, from the distant and recent past, in the 21st Century American kitchen. This program is made possible in part by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly.

Wines 101 - Wednesday, June 4 at 7pm
Do you feel uncertain about what wine to serve? Local freelance writer, Shopper columnist and Winestyles associate Nancy Yos will talk about food and wine pairings; inexpensive "grocery store" wines you would be happy to serve guests; and matching wines with your favorite summer BBQ food. There will be a tasting of four of her favorite wine choices.

StingRays Concert - Tuesday, June 10 at 7pm
The StingRays have played their 60's and 70's Rock & Roll for dancing crowds and love interacting with their audiences through trivia and dance contests, going into the audience and zany moves reminiscent of the bands whose music they play.

Do You Knead Bread? - Monday, June 16 at 7pm
Marty Linderborg, new owner of in The Great Harvest Bread Company in Palos Park, will discuss the health benefits of eating whole grain breads and provide samples of her favorites! Learn why you don't needs preservatives, and how important the color of food is to your diet.

Hummingbirds - Our Flying Jewels! - Tuesday, June 24 at 7pm
Those colorful, iridescent little bundles of energy are some of the most enjoyable animals to observe in nature. Our speaker, Nancy Carroll, who is a member of The Hummingbird Society, will share many interesting and amazing facts about Hummers. Learn how to identify different species, what to plant in a yard to attract them, and information about feeders. Nancy will also show a special Hummingbird feeder that always attracts them, and is very easy to keep clean.

Computer Education

John Hojek teaches computer education classes all over the southwest side and now, you can learn from his expertise. John will lead the following four classes and provide laptop computers for all attendees. There is a resident and non-resident fee, no refunds, and limit of 15 students. Signup for non-residents begins May 12.

Intro to Computers, Friday, May 16 from 10am to 12pm - $10 fee / $15 N/R fee
Designed for the first time user, this class covers turning on the computer, passwords, desktop features, opening, closing and resizing windows, as well as the commands, functions and features of any Windows program. You will also learn the proper way to work with the mouse.

Basic Internet, Wednesday, June 25 from 6pm to 8pm - $10 fee / $15 N/R fee
This class assumes the student knows nothing about using the Internet. Topics will include equipment, types of service and different providers. You will also learn how to navigate a website, webpage and popular search engines.
